While reviewing my notes for teaching Dewey and locating information in the library I noticed the absolute "Books are shelved left to right, top to bottom." No one has ever questioned this, but it occurred to me that this might not be so in countries where texts are read right to left, back to front, etc. Is left to right shelving a universal library practice or not?
