I volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross and we only take money. It is then wired to the area and spent as close to the disaster as possible. This way the food is what they are used to eat and the other materials are what will be useful in that country. It is a very successful way of stimulating the local economy that is now suffering and it saves all the shipping and handling charges. Cans of food collected in New Jersey would have to be sorted, packaged, shipped to an airport, flown halfway around the world, unpacked, trucked..... Mondy to one of the main NGOs will reach the needy right away. Materials bought locally are already being distributed. Val Hamilton Teach-Librarian Dr. George M.
