I have all of my students - K to 5 shelve their books after returning
them. It started when a library media specialist across town told me she
had her students shelve their own books. I then told my students and
made a challenge to them that I knew if those other students could do it
they could too. They were very enthusiastic. By the time the enthusiasm
wore off they were in the habit. Since the K and 1 only check out from
the Everybody section it was very easy for them. When they return their
book(s) I have them look at the spine and tell me the letter of the
shelf where each book belongs. It gets a little trickier when the
students get into the non-fiction books. That is where I have found the
most problems. I do instruct them that if they don't know where a book
goes, can't find the correct shelf or are having another problem that
they are to put the book(s) on a cart. Once a week I have a parent who
comes in and shelves the books from the cart, she often finds misshelved
books and straightens shelves. On the whole it is OK. There are times
when I get frustrated because I find a lot of book out of place, but for
the most part it is the only way I can get the books back on the shelf
in a reasonable amount of time. I know I do not have time to do it myself.

If you choose to try it you need to prepare yourself that everything is
not going to stay neat and orderly. I made sure every shelf had a label
on it. I also tried to put a picture and on the non-fiction books I
listed the main subjects locate on that shelf. I also have the students
get the book on the correct shelf, but do not worry about the order on
the shelf. It would be too stressful on me to require this. I am not
into being the shelf police.

Another thing I told the students when I first started this was that if
they could locate the book on the shelf, especially after locating the
card number in the card catalog then they should be able to locate the
same shelf to return the book.

From time to time I remind them about the importance of shlelving the
books correctly, keeping the shelves and library neat, etc. It has
worked for me fine for about 4 years now. Good luck.
