This year we implemented a school-wide email correspondence system. All
teachers have a diocesan email account (we are a Catholic diocesan high
school). This is the email address given to students and parents. A Grade
program was installed on all teacher computers for them to use and with this
program a student's grades can be emailed to the parent. Also, any
correspondence between teacher and parent can be handled this way. Students
can also email their papers in if their printer goes on the blink, etc. For
those who want to be able to access the email at home and because the
administration sends correspondence to all teachers through email, our
principal offers to pay up to $20 toward the cost of internet service for
the teachers. He uses some of the Professional Development money and they
must submit a copy of their ISP bill.
We send grades often - some teachers use it every week, but all the school
grades are sent out at mid-term, Semester and Finals.
It has worked out very well. It eliminates those "surprises" that report
cards always seem to generate. Also, admin can take care of some of the
memos that seem to get overlooked when on paper. Over Christmas break we
received one that reminded us of a Staff Development day coming this month
and what we all need to have ready for it. It reminded me of something I
need to finish for one of the other teachers to incorporate in her report.
