Okay. I think this article has given us all something to think about. While
I was reading it I was thinking of the reference materials lesson I have
just spent the last 2 weeks teaching to 5th and 6th graders. I know he is
referring to college students but I can't imagine giving up teaching
information literacy at my level. These students have to be taught location
and access skills at some point and I believe it must start early and
continue on through high school. I also saw students' interests spark when
looking through the almanac and the encyclopedia. How often are students
given a chance to just browse these types of materials? Thinking of giving
this up to search solely online reminded me of the comment someone made
about missing the card catalogs because of the opportunity to see the other
interesting materials available. We don't get that from online searching, do
we? I also would like to streamline my students' online searching by
purchasing one of the new interfaces like PinPoint from Sagebrush. The one
comment I must admit that gave me a grin was the one about librarians loving
the search more than the find. I didn't know it was a known librarian
characteristic; I just thought I was a bit strange. ;-)
