I am a new librarian who has just opened a new school library. With the support of my faculty and my principal, I am seeking to develop a library program that does not involve a commercially made and purchased reading program. My goal is to motivate students in grades 1-5 to read and to get them excited about reading without testing for levels or rewarding points and prizes. The program does not have to be the same for all grade levels. For example, I could do something for 2nd grade that is different from 5th grade. I am seeking some fun suggestions from this wonderful group of knowledgeable librarians. I am not criticizing these commercial programs. I simply want to try another route! I will report the suggestions I get. Thank you.
