Hi Everyone!
This year I took on a more involved role in the our school wide reading
incentive program with our reading specialist. We have a "Go for the Gold"
Olympics theme which is an extention of the Pizza Hut Book It program. It
runs the same way Book it runs with the added incentive that the grade level
with the highest percentage of reading slips handed in each month wins the
"Reading Torch" for their hall and everyone who participates gets to check
out an extra book one time that month. We felt that students were not
participating before because they didn't go to Pizza Hut. The school piece
was added to encourage more kids to participate.
Well, after half of the year has gone by, we have poor participation. Last
month only 34% of our whole school participated. I guess I just expected
more! I do feel that I am, as well as most of the classroom teachers are
doing a good job of constant encouragement to get the kids excited.
I am curious what level of participation other schools have with similar
programs in place. I'd hate to discontinue the program if this is the best
that can be expected.
I'd appreciate any feedback you could share about level of participation in
reading incentive programs at your elementary school. Thanks!
