I see this kind of waste on a daily basis. And yet recent technology
reports give the impression that students know all there is to know
about tech. Yet - they don't seem to realize that you can not only copy
and paste text into a word document, but you can also 1.) highlight the
text you want and then choose "print" and tick the "print selection" box
to print only the highlighted text, and 2) click file/print previewto
determine exactly how many pages there are in the whole article.

And yet in my district they have cut back on computer applications &
keyboarding classes (or assigned them to anyone who might have a space
in thier schedule) in the mistaken belief that students already know it
all, or that the content area teachers will teach the skills when it
becomes apparent that the kids need the instruction.

As the people on the front lines who see all sorts of mis-use of
technology and mis-education in the use of technology- we need to
continue our efforts to teach students what they "already know" (!!).
And, if we are in schools that are not doing a good job with this, we
must advocate for a consistent curriculum that actually teaches these
skills in an organized and sequential manner - not the hit and miss
efforts that I see right now. Yes - I know that such curriculum does
exist - but in many schools it is not really "owned" by anyone in
particular. So, most of all that curriculum must be assigned to
someone. If everyone owns the curriculum, no one owns the curriculum.

We've had experiences with Encarta where a student needs one piece of
information in an article and rather than copy it out and paste it into
a
Word document, will print out the entire article. If it's on a big topic
(e.g Native Americans, France) you can end up with a 45 page printout.
The
online encyclopedia gives no indication of the length of the article and
our
printers don't list the amount of pages to be printed.

Yet the same student will find the information in a print volume,
bookmark
it and then ask to have the single page printed on the copier.
