Thank-you to everyone who responded to my question about online databases. Following are the responses. We use Grolier extensively and it is really good! Thomson Gale has great databases that we use a great deal. In particular, our students use Biography Resource Center, Science Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, and Student Resource Center. Here's a link to Gale's list of databases: http://www.gale.com/servlet/BrowseMediaServlet?region=9&imprint=000&id=O <http://www.gale.com/servlet/BrowseMediaServlet?region=9&imprint=000&id=O> I have used the Gale databases (several components) and really like them. Especially for high school. Without a doubt - our Gale Databases. Student Resource Center is great - but if you can also afford to purchase Opposing viewpoint, Gale makes both databases searchable from the OV database. Together they are an absolutely awesome resource. The kids like to use it and often actually go there before they go to google. One of the most used databases we have is InfoTrac by Gale. They also have an Opposing Viewpoints database that is excellent. Our statistics are always highest on the InfoTrac databases. In the package we have there are about 17 individual databases. I have had InfoTrac for many years and I am very satisfied with the product and support. We now obtain it through our local BOCES so that the price has been considerably reduced. We love Opposing Viewpoints from Info Trac. It costs us $1,400 a year for a high school of 1200. We really like the SIRS package of SIRS Research, Renaissance and Government. It works well for art, science, controversial topics. Opposing Viewpoints ELibrary SIRS Electric Library and EBSCO are the most used. Although we have World Book, Clip ART, and others. When Databases first came out I used SIRS and some others - I found a couple of good ones were easier for the kids then a variety of different ones. We have a collection of databases purchased through our school library system. We pay $6.60 per student for these. They include Proquest, Litfinder, Gale Literature Resource Center, Sirs Researcher and Facts.com. I also pay individually for CQ Researcher Online, Gale Discovering Collection, Wilson Biographies and Opposing Viewpoints Online. If I could afford only one, it would be Proquest. If I could afford only one literature database it would be the Resource Center, but the Litfinder is a great package for the money (only $400 for poems, essays, short stories and the associated explications). Gale right now has a free trial for its Science database. You might want to take a look at it, and see if it would support your research projects. -- Nancy Stiner <mailto:nstiner@mchsi.com> 7-12 Media Specialist Iowa Falls Community School Dirstict <http://www.iowa-falls.k12.ia.us/> 50126 Iowa Falls, Iowa -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
