My 5th grade students are requesting more 'middle school' books with middle school characters and middle school situations (their exact words). While there are some books that they will just have to wait until they're in middle school to read, I figure there are some books that are meaty enough to make them happy but not too knee deep in middle school or high school subjects. It always happens that the minute I'm put on the spot, my mind goes blank. What are some good 'on the cusp of middle school' books...especially series. The students asking for these tend to shy away from fantasy or science fiction and want things 'real'. I'm sure the minute I send this, I'll think of something but I've been racking my brain all weekend....
