How do you teach middle school students (7th grade) how to use non-fiction materials? I talk about/show the table of contents, the index, and the subtitle, etc., but am interested to know how you approach the subject. Do you use handouts, for example? A couple of classes will be coming in to do a research project on explorers, and the teacher feels, not surprisingly, that the students are in dire need of how to use a book! My lesson needs to cut to the chase in order to give them time in the period to actually do the research. (I've looked through the archives to no avail). Thanks for your input and ideas.
