It amused me to read the article about students "knowing" how to do research in academia. Just yesterday a History instructor brought his class (unannounced) to our teeny tiny library for the students to look up the answers to a set of prepared questions. 20 students appear- we have 7 computers, our card catalog is on-line- instructor had not given us a set of questions, had not even mentioned he was bringing his class (when asked about the lack of notice- he said "you were closed yesterday" MLK Day no one was open.....). Guess what the students used to look up the answers? Not our state paid for databases, notour reference works, not our card catalog to see what print materials or e-books we had- they used (drum roll please) Ask Jeeves.....and the instructor just stood around and said "well I hoped they'd use print sources" AAGHHHHHHHH He accepted the "just good enough" search and they did what was easiest for them. But of course- no one needs information literacy training....... -- Kate Stirk, Librarian North Metro Technical College; Acworth, GA, USA 17 years a Media Specialist in Central Florida KateStirk@comcast.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
