I just spent the last few days in Boston with Walter --- and hours each day
at ALA Midwinter. For the past year we have served on Popular Paperbacks for
Young Adults Committee together (Walter as subchair). Walter will be the
chair for the 2005 Committee - I am subchair of the committee to examine
"pg" literature. I complained so much about the language and situations in
some of the YA books - it was "put up or shut up" time for me. I will asking
soon everyone on this list to start nominating titles for examination by
this ALA committee - once we figure out what "PG" means. We want to be
positive and not negative - and look at titles for what they include- not
for what they exclude. But, back to Walter...

Walter is not only a giant of a person - but he is a giant of literature.
His knowledge and enthusiasm for children, YA and the literature published
for them is overwhelming. He is outrageous, bigger than life and I love him.
He will have your students eating out of his hand and hanging on to every
word. I have not been at his presentations, however, but will be soon as he
told me he is coming to Rochester to do one.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask Walter to be at your school..
