I had the same reaction that Peter and Shonda had: what are these people
talking about. AASL's reaction to the plan was very different from mine.
AASL's experience in school libraries is very different than mine.

Here in NJ as elsewhere in our country, school libraries are suffering more
than most school programs as money becomes tighter. We are being asked to do
a whole lot more with a whole lot less resources and staff. We are usually
the first place in the school to experience budget cuts and the last place
to get a restoration of funds when funding becomes available.

If as they state: "Well-stocked and well-staffed school library media
programs are strategically poised to support the major action steps and
recommendations identified in the plan.", then I guess many of the school
libraries in the US are NOT able to support the steps and recommendations in
the plan.

I really think that we should find a way (besides complaining to members of
this forum) to convey our concerns about AASL's reaction to the study. I
don't know what experience the writers of this document have but clearly
they are out of touch with the reality of many school libraries in the US.

Jo-who just completed a day with the PTO sponsored book fair in the library
while trying to conduct fixed scheduled classes!
