Just thought that I would forward along some of the messages I received from around the world - loved getting email from Malta and Australia to name a few. Found that there are many systems of classification, but many are altered versions of Dewey and you gotta love the Universal classification system which as you can see is not universally used! Interesting to see the results - below are a few pasted messages: the school had some Japanese visitors, one of whom was in charge of the school's library. She said their Dewey was a little different to ours! Australia uses Dewey almost entirely! Some LC in the state and tertiery institutions. Have a great day from Sydney Australia My cataloging prof said that Dewey is used in many countries, even at the higher ed level (this was a few years ago, so I'm not sure I remember correctly). I checked the Oxford (England) University library, and this is true (their circulating collection is in Dewey, specific collections are not) At Cambridge, however, it is not true--I couldn't tell what type of system they used. The National Library of France has part of their circulating collection in Dewey. Here are some links: http://catalogue.bnf.fr/framesWEB.jsp;jsessionid=0000ginrDXzLkPj08_icN7dtSsw:-1?host=catalogue (National Library of France, in French) http://library.ox.ac.uk/ (Oxford University Library) Well I have worked in a number of UK libraries and have used Dewey and the Library of Congress. Dewey, however, is just about standard in schools, universities and public libraries - hope this helps Most are the same as we are Dewey for schools and public libraries, and LC for higher Ed. No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance. Atwood H.
