I agree with Jan...I buy paperback fiction and circulating non-fiction when possible. We cover them with Kapco rigid plastic covers and use fiberglass tape on the hinges to help them last longer. My experience with teenagers is that they'd rather checkout paperbacks than hardcovers...perhaps it's something to do with the weight of their backpacks these days. I prefer paperbacks for another reason -- my current schools have quite a bit of population turn over and I'd rather lose a $5.00 paperback than an $18.00 library bound hardcover when a student moves. When I'm buying reference, I go for the hardcover, though.
