I'd like your thoughts on this. I see so many assignments that ask students to research information on "x", and write a one page report or do a poster, etc. and be sure to put it in your own words and include a Works Cited page. According to MLA format, shouldn't students also be required to include parenthetical documentation. They are not creating anything new. They are simply repeating someone else's work, albeit in their own words. We are a 6-8 school. Our 6th grade comes to us with little , if any, practice doing research and creating Works Cited pages, so we are starting at the beginning with them. Is it too much to expect them to be able to parenthetically document their reports? I appreciate any input you can share.
