We actually require students to do parenthetical citations in the 4th and
5th grade. The point is to prepare them for the 3-4 page research papers
that they will do in the 6th grade AND to get them into the practice of
citing other people's works that have been used to create their report.

In the K-3rd grade, they create a bibliography page for anything that they
write (1-2 pages) of simple research and if materials are used to do the
research. Rather than calling it a bibliography page, they called it a
"Thank You" page (to thank the authors of the books that they used to help
write the reports).

Personally, I don't think you can start too early with this simple practice
of parenthical citations or bibliographies. We have so many problems with
students who don't (or won't) cite works, I think it's important that we
train them early to remember to use proper citations and to follow these
rules when writing papers. Just keep it simple and add to the process each
year as they progress through junior high and high school.

Subject: [LM_NET] Parenthetical documentation
