I was cleaning up some email today and realized that I had sent an email back in November asking for help with titles of books with strong settings to help teach the concept to students who were just starting on short stories. I just realized that I neglected to send out the hit, so am rectifying this right now! Some of the titles I ended up using were King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (so they would realize some non-conventional settings), Polar Express, Cinder Edna, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Cello of Mr. O. While I didn't get many hits, here are the responses I did receive: I would definitely recommend Jacqueline Woodson's The Other Side and Jane Yolen's All Those Secrets of the World because the setting of these books (especially the time period) is so important to the understanding of the story. Both of these time periods must be inferred from clues provided in the story. Jane Yolen's Owl Moon is also a good choice, but the setting is very obvious as to its importance to the development of the story. --------------------- I like these for setting: Make Way for Ducklings and One Day in Maine by Robert McCloskey Storm in the Night by Mary Stolz Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold The entire Smithsonia Institute series of books about different animals are excellent for setting. They take an animal and in picture book format present its format. The one I have in front of me is by Victoria Sherrow entitled CHIPMUNK AT HOLLOW TREE LANE. There are other authors in this series. I also use the Henry and Mudge books by Cynthia Rylant to instruct story elements. They are especially strong in characterization and setting. ---------------- First Dog by Jan Brett ---------------- I used "Crow Boy" and "When I Was Young In the Mountains" Thanks for your help!
