My thought is that these legends and folktales, unlike literature, have no
discernable author; they had been oral traditions long before they were
written down, and still live on as oral traditions in some places.  I
generally show the students several variations of a well known story, such
as The three little pigs, after asking THEM to tell the story.  I point out
that you can tell the story in your own words, and that's how the story
started out, and NOT as something that someone wrote down.  They seem to be
happy with this explanation.


Of course, this division between the 300s and the 800s makes it hard to
decide where to put Hans Christian Andersen, since at least some of his
stories were original with him.  The confusion is additionally exacerbated
by our need to make it easy for our patrons to find what they want.
