Dear all- Many of you wanted the information on voiceovers! I recieved very few replies, but the gist of those is below. Seems as if the odds of 'making it' with voiceovers is as slim as being discovered at the local soda shop! There should be a local chapter of AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) in the area that help point someone in the right direction. And agents are a necessary evil. Good luck -- it's a super tight part of the industry. Worse than regular acting. Yes you do have a talent agent who specializes in voice over. I would recommend the student call some of the talent agents in the area and ask questions. They may know of workshops, etc. in your area. I wouldn't recommend a degree in broadcasting (I actually have one) unless you plan on being a journalist -- the trade schools provide excellent training in less time and a lot cheaper. Short answer...if the kid is gifted and already HAS the talent (like Charlie Van Dyke, for example who sounded the same way when he was 16)...he'll get found fairly quick. If not, forget it. There's just no way to "learn" it. For all the years I did radio, my one recurring "voice-over" was making a recording for Southwestern Bell Mobile (now Cingular) saying the "the mobile number you have called is not answering, please try again later." Not EVEN 15 seconds of fame!!!
