February 20-26, 2005 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada. For the last twenty years, the Freedom of Expression Committee of the Book and Periodical Council has asserted that "freedom of expression is a fundamental right of all Canadians, and freedom to read is part of that precious heritage." For more information on this topic which includes background on banned books go to their website: www.freedomtoread.ca On this same topic -- I would like to know how other Catholic schools deal with this whole issue. I would very much like to promote freedom to read but am apprehensive about getting challenged that certain books would not be deemed "appropriate for a Catholic school". An example of my experience here is that last year I was told to remove the Left Behind series from our library because they were "anti-Catholic". Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We were looking for any information on the history of banned books, how books are challenged, and the process of getting a book banned. If anyone has any research on this topic(pro or con) and/or your school's or district's policy we would greatly appeciate it? Thanks in advance ===== Heather M.
