I had some requests to "pass on" the emails I received about visual literacy so here they are. Thanks everyone for your help! Stacy Cameron Library Student TWU - Denton, TX robandstacy@panaband.com There is an article on visual literacy in the June 2004 issue of School Library Journal called Picture Perfect by Debra Lau Whelen. It also suggests titles that can be used. In the same issue there is also an article called "Teaching Parents to Read" that discusses workshops on how to use picture books to promote the six specific skills children need before they enter kindergarten and shares strategies that motivate. The workshops are available online: www.pla.org/earlyliteracy.htm Not sure if this will help, but while doing grad work at the Bread Loaf School of English I developed a web site called PhotoLiteracy that looks at photographs as primary sources. You may view it at http://www.angelfire.com/sc3/photoliteracy/ In South Carolina we actually have viewing standards as part of our Language Arts Standards but I don't think everyone has taken notice of that. My site includes a few simple lessons tied to those viewing standards. I think they could be adapted for all grade levels.
