Buying huge numbers of "hot" books by major public libraries and discarding
them when the "fervor" has abated has been a common practice for between 25
and 30 years.

Personally by the time we weed books they are not fit for anyone so
they basically get 'dumped', though they do go through the process of
going to the surplus sale. Someone may purchase some, but they are
usually in such bad shape no one would really want them.

On another note, I just purchased Anne Rivers Siddons' 2004 copyright
book 'Islands' from a second hand book seller through Amazon. When it
arrived yesterday I was concerned because it is a library book from a
public library in Georgia and in perfectly fine condition! I found the
library online and wrote to the director about my concern. The reply I
got today was basically 'we bought a lot of copies when the book was
popular so now we don't need it, so it has been outsourced to a used
book seller'! Boy, I wish I had the funds to be able to 'casually throw
away' good books! It isn't marked with a discard stamp because she said
that reduces its value. Is this a common practice among public
libraries?
