You can put anything you want into reference. Cost is as much a factor as content, but especially when the required info may be on a few pages (a manageable number for the copy machine) it doesn't inconvenience students to have them in reference. Also, if the content will be needed by many people within a short time, tha's another reason to restrict circulation, or put in reference. Multivolume works, especially those that have the index in only one of the volumes are good candidates too, because you need the index to use the set. If an item is out of print, or would be hard to replace it should probably go in reference. Big, bulky Encyclopedias of the . . . are also in reference. We keep specialized encyclopedias, multi-volume sets, standing order sets (American Writers, Current Biography, etc) all the atlases and mmost of the dictionaries and thesauri, Magill's literature series, Companions for American History, etc. all in reference.
