Our voices have been heard! After two years of omitting any mention of
school libraries in their February reading theme edition, NEA has a BOLD
yellow box entitled, Tempting Teen Readers: Hot Tips from School
Librarians. Our message has been heard. AASL's leadership was
instrumental in reaching out to NEA.
Now, it is time to say thank you! I know it seems to be ridiculous to
say thank you when we should have been included all along. Just think
of the it as a potential forum for writing more positive information
about school libraries. :-) Sharpen your pencils and think about
how we can use this to our advantage!
I do have a quick thought about where to start when writing these
thank yous. Earlier this year two of Ohio's librarians wrote this type
of letter in response to an article in our state union publication. One
of the things that I loved about our members letters to OEA's Ohio
Schools was that they used the opportunities to share additional
positive information about school libraries. This is a GREAT chance to
shine is a positive way and to let the NEA leadership know that WE are
active MEMBERS of the education profession!
