I have to say that I went to the National Book Festival and was disappointed. Each state was represented but for the most part all they did was hand out free bookmarks, posters, pencils, oh and I don't want to forget the state travel guides which I found amusing, etc. The one exception was the LOC which did have some interesting exhibits. I saw very little focus on actual library services and reading. This was of course intermingled with the hand-full of authors from each genre reading from their books or discussing the writing process, but they were only given a very limited amount of time (about 30-40 minutes if I remember correctly). There were a couple of book sale tents too, but I can go to a bookstore anytime. I hope to go this next fall too - and it costs big bucks to get there from St. Louis. Something like 70,000 people attended! I am very pleased that the LOC and Laura Bush are co-sponsoring this event!! Why do we think that's going to change this term? Just because they say literacy is the focus? ... and, shouldn't literacy efforts start at home? :-) Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning? -- Florence, South Carolina, Jan. 11, 2000 http://tinyurl.com/3l2kn C.
