I define it for my high schoolers pretty much the same way I do for my
elementary kids--it's a book that you mainly use "to look things up in"!
(Up in which to look things?)

In other words, a book whose intended purpose, and general use, is not
to be read through to gain a solid overview of a topic, but which is
designed to be scanned by the user for specific isolated pieces of
information, unconnected to the other pieces of information contained
therein.

one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit
facts." Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.

I'm working on a library unit for my ninth graders. How would you
define the
difference between Reference Books and Nonfiction Books?

Thanks!
