I would like to express some concern about lumping Wick's I Spy books with fad fiction like Sponge Bob. Not only do these books attract reluctant readers but the images contained within are often complicated puzzles that are exercising intense cognitive skills. Some students who struggle with reading often find success in puzzling out secret messages, figuring out how the photographs were taken and how the elaborate models were made. We have had children bridge from the I Spy books to Wick's other non-fiction titles-A Drop of Water and Walter Wick's Optical Tricks. My one caution is the poor bindings that last but a few circs. Hopefully this is being solved by Scholastic with their new library editions that I have on-order.
