Dear Friends, Tamara who is a media specialist about 30-45 minutes away from me provided me with information she recieved from the State Department of Education which basically states what library enhancement money can be spent on ("expenditures may include books, book binding, repair, CD Roms, computer software, computer equipment, cataloging, audiovisual materials, newspapers, magazines, recordings, and video tapes") but seems to leave how much is spent on what up to the budget or media committee. Below is a list of replies from other media specialists as well. I would love to hear more replies. :) Sincerely, Denise Glenn Media Specialist Northside School Opelika, AL Responses: Denise, I've never heard of any percentages that the state mandates on how LE is spent. There are restrictions on how the money is spent. You cannot buy furniture (book carts aren't considered furniture) and the items bought must reside in the library. Percentages are usually determined by the library budget committee, but then it isn't written in stone. You are the one who knows your collection. I follow the SACS regulations about age of collection and number of print magazine subscriptions, etc. and concentrate on a different section of the library each year. Hope this helps Denise, I have been a media specialist in Alabama for about 15 years and have never really known any restrictions placed on spending the Enhancement fund. I have used it for books, equipment, magazines, newspapers, furniture and basically anything I need to run my program. I hope this helps. Hi Denise! Each school is different. It depends on your collection and what your school's needs are. I generally do 75% books and AR quizzes, 20% videos and audios, and 5% for supplies (tape, labels, paper, and scissors). This is my standard. We are fortunate to have a resource center with a great collection of videos to correlate to the curriculum. You might need more money for videos some years or not as much. It is flexible. -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
