I agree with Carolyn. I am a high school librarian and I can't tell you how many high school students don't have a clue about finding a book on the shelf, even if I hand them the call number. I've quizzed some of these kids while instructing them in how to locate a book. Most said they never had to find a book in elementary or middle school. Either the librarian got the book for them, or it was "out" somewhere and they happened to see, or (horrors) they never checked out a book in elem or middle school. I'm in a rather affluent area, and many of these kids rarely use the public library. Their parents take them to the book stores, so they want to know where the mysteries, scifi, etc. are. Then I have to explain how libraries are arranged and why you need to use the catalog. Please, elementary librarians, make sure you teach your students how to locate books by using your catalog and then locating a call number on the shelf. This is a lifelong skill we all need to be teaching at every level. Lee D. Gordon Librarian Sierra Vista High School 8100 W. Robindale Rd.
