Dear Mariya Very well said. As an elementary librarian, I, too teach my students how to find books on the shelves. I am a "release" teacher, which means, I have students while teachers have their planning periods. I have no assistants. I check out books at the end of the day, because I want to instruct my students on reading and information literacy for the hour I have them. I only see them for one hour once a week. When students leave elementary school, they may or may not attend a middle school that has a library or one staffed by a certified librarian. They may or may not use the library, if there is one. Consequently, those skills learned may be forgotten by the time they attend high school. One more point. I am in a large urban school district that have so few librarians in elementary schools it is inexcusable. To save money, about 5 million according to their report, they closed the elementary school libraries. Yet, they want to see our elementary students improve their reading/writing skills on those state tests. I guess the classroom teacher can do that by him/herself.
