I thought about all those reasons for not having live animals in the library (allergies, disease, etc). So, I brought in an old bird cage that I spray painted black and hung plush birds in it. Kids loved poking at the birds that I hung with fishing line from the top of the cage. No bird bites. I also made fake fish by spray painting magnolia leaves and using water colors to add stripes, dots, etc. I glued black string on the leaf and threaded it through a piece of cardboard the size of the aquarium top that I had covered with blue tissue paper. I hung the "fish" at different levels and depths so it looked like a school of fish in the tank. I put blue tissue paper on the bottom of the tank too. (My sons said I had too much time on my hands). The fish tank fits nicely on a shelf. You could cut out fish from some old National Geographic for a more realistic tank. The black thread disappears. Both gave the library the appearance of "live" animals without all the problems of feeding, cleaning, allergies, etc! I still have the fish tank and the bird cage in my office at home. -- Kate Stirk, Librarian North Metro Technical College; Acworth, GA, USA 17 years a Media Specialist in Central Florida KateStirk@comcast.net View from the Library (BLOG) http://northmetrotechlibraryatacworth.blogspot.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
