History and Critical Thinking Workshop. Register at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/libraryarchives/critical_thinking_registration.asp for "History & Critical Thinking," a one-day workshop for middle and high school teachers sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Society. What is this? The workshop will start at 10:00a.m. and end about 3:00p.m. The morning will be devoted to the elements of critical thinking and how to present them to kids. During a working lunch we'll demonstrate how to find hundreds of primary sources about Wisconsin history on the Web, along with reliable background information on them. After lunch we'll show you how to integrate these primary sources with your textbook to foster critical thinking in your U.S. history or social studies students. We'll also give you an 87-page textbook with 10 critical thinking lessons you can use in class, 30 activities for nurturing critical thinking in your students, and 20 ready-to-use lesson plans for connecting local Wisconsin events to U.S. history texts. Who is it for? It's aimed primarily at secondary school teachers, but educators working with students of other ages are also welcome. Enrollment is limited to 15 people per workshop. How will it work? Throughout the day we'll balance presentations, hands-on activities, and small-group discussions. Where and when? 10 sessions have been scheduled around the state in late summer and early fall: Aug.15, Madison (Wis. Historical Society) Aug.17, Eau Claire (UW-Eau Claire) Aug.19, Oshkosh (UW-Oshkosh) Aug.23, Milwaukee (Marquette University) Aug.24, Green Bay (UW-Green Bay) Sept.30, Green Bay (UW-Green Bay) Oct.10, Madison (Wis. Historical Society) Oct.13, Milwaukee (Marquette University) Oct.17, Stevens Point (UW-Stevens Point) Oct.21, Eau Claire (UW-Eau Claire). How much does it cost? Nothing! There is no charge for the workshop or the critical thinking handbook. But there is also no compensation for travel or meals, no continuing ed or graduate credits for attending, and no money available to cover the cost of substitute teachers. Your CESA or school district may be able to help with these costs. What's next? If you want to participate, complete the registration form at the URL above or below. We'll send you a confirmation email now, and more details as the day draws closer. If your plans change and you can't attend, please let us know so we can invite someone from the waiting list to take your place. Questions?
