Our county is building a new school that will replace my current junior high, and will add students from an overcrowded elementary school in the district. So, next year, I will be one of two media specialists in a brand new K-8 school. We have many questions for those of you who are already in a K-8 environment. How do you shelve your books? We currently have AR books shelved by themselves in AR book level order. I'm thinking of a 4th or 5th grader who is reading on a higher level - do you give them access to all of the books, even though so many young adult novels contain language not appropriate for younger students? Conversely, do your older readers who cannot read well go to the elementary books? Do you have an "elementary" side and a "secondary" side? Do you have regularly scheduled classes for the elementary students? How does that affect time spent with secondary students? These are just a few of the many questions I feel that I will have as we continue our planning. I was hoping to find some K-8 media specialists who would not mind answering my questions as they come up. Thanking you in advance.
