Hi,

I want to use a rock song as a spring board for reviewing/introducing
reference books such a the almanac, encyclopedia, dictionary and thesaurus
with my fifth graders, using the library, math skills, etc.

I emailed last week about using We didn't start the fire by Billy Joel and I
am torn about using it because a lot of the responses said 7th grade, that
they wouldn't have the background to understand the questions, that it would
take to long, etc. Other responses thought that this was a great idea and
wanted a copy so I am not sure what to do.

1985 is a popular song that they love. It is currently played on the radio
and they love to sing along but I don't think that they know what they are
singing.. It was very popular at our fifth grade dance last year. (Lyrics
are below). If I decide to use in during class, I would look for a clean
version of the song to play that would delete the word ass.

The students would have worksheets with questions such as

1. What does CPA stand for?

2. What kind of education do you need to become a CPA?

3. List two antonyms for the word uncool.

4. 1985 was how many years before you were born?

5. Which was not president during the 1980s
a. Reagan
b. Bush
c. Ford

6. Where was Bruce Springsteen born?

7. How old is Bruce Springsteen?

What do you think?

Sharon

Woo-hoo-hoo

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husbands a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happen to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of White Snake's car
Her yellow SUV, is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing, has been, alright

Since Bruce Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she still preoccupied

1985

Woo-hoo-hoo

She's seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink
Even Saint Elmo's Fire
She rocked out to wham
Not a big Limp Biscuit fan
Thought she'd get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where's the mini-skirt made of snake skin
And who's the other guy singing in Van Halen
When did reality, become T.V.
What ever happen to sitcoms, game shows

On the radio was

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she's still preoccupied

Woo-hoo-hoo

She hates time, make it stop
When did Motley Crue become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop!
Stop!
Stop!

And bring back

Springstein, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2, and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids, in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
But she's still preoccupied
