There was a man who had been targeted by a rowdy bunch of kids, who sought
to chide and abuse him. One day the man came out of his house and announced
to the youths that he would pay each of them a dollar if they would come by
the next day, at that same time, and offer their best curses to him.

Well, they thought him crazy, but you must know they showed up the next day
and applied themselves to the task--with enthusiasm. When they had finished,
he rewarded them with a dollar each, as promised. Then he advised that they
were welcome to return again the next day, but he would only be able to pay
them a quarter for their efforts.

Several returned, and gave it their best, again. This time, after the man
paid them their reward, he advised that after today they were welcome to
return and continue as before, but he would not be able to pay them.

Do I have to tell you the result?

It wasn't worth the effort for them to continue. They looked upon the idea
with scorn. Why should they give it away... ?
