Last year we had a school-wide reading incentive program called "Reach for the Stars". We challenged students to keep track of the minutes they spent reading on a log sheet which was collected and tallied every Friday for 4 weeks. Our school goal was set for 240,000 minutes. Upon reaching our goal, the PTO purchased a star through starregistry.com which was named after our school. The students who read the most was Principal for a Day. The class who read the most was treated to a pizza party. Results were posted each week on a bar graph in the cafeteria. It was an easy contest and a lot of fun. By keeping track of time rather than the number of pages or books read, it created a fair playing field for all students regardless of reading ability. I am looking to do something similar again this year but stumped for a new theme? Any suggestions?
