Dear wise ones, I have recently accepted a position as library media specialist at a K-8 school in White Pine, TN. This is my first position as I am fresh out of grad school and I am looking for some tips as to what to focus on in my first year. For the past 3 years, the library has been run by two different classroom teachers. I will be operating on a fixed schedule, in which I see 6th, 7th, and 8th graders every day for nine weeks (first thing in the morning), after which I will get a new group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders every nine weeks. I also will see each K-5 class once a week. The schedule is set up so that every day I will see students from every level from K-8. I have the students for 40 minutes each. I also have an aide who will be in the library abour 60% of the time (I'll be sharing her with 4th and 5th grades), but who does not like to do activities with the students. I also have one 40 minute planning period four days each week and a scheduled lunch period every day. I would like to try to do some activities involving cooperation between the middle school students and some of the elementary classes, and would like to hear about activities that others have used and that have been successful. I am also interested in advice regarding how exactly to go about pursuing grants from Improving Literacy through School Libraries program offered by the federal government. Teachers at the school have commented that the library does not have enough books for our student population and the teacher who supervised the media center last year spoke of the limited funds available for purchasing materials. However, the school is Title I (I believe that means 60% of students receive free or reduced lunch), so we should be eligible for funds from this program. I'm just not sure how to go about asking for the money. Do I have to come up with a catchy program or can I evaluate the collection, find which areas are lacking, make a list of books we want and ask for the funds to purchase them? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you may have.
