Apparently, this bounced the first time I posted...

We had all our shelving built by a local woodworking shop to my specs when
our budget would not cover readymade shelving. They have been wonderful,
look great, and more than met our needs. In fact, we just had him come back
today, ten years later, and install some more!

If you investigate this possibility, you may be able to get a discount or
maybe even a donation. Promise to put up a small plaque with the name of the
company or something. (We paid cash for ours, but did get a nice discount
because the builder used to attend the church that originally built our
school. We are a K-8 non-denominational Christian school. And in fact, state
aux. funds actually paid for the new shelves, since they hold books the
students use. Wheeee!)

Other thoughts - some (all?) banks are required to give so much in
charitable donations each year. Ask if one on your area would like to garner
some publicity by paying for new shelves. It would be a great photo op for
some executive, cutting a ribbon across the newly-refurbished room, and the
ones in our area at least prefer to give or pay for tangible items rather
than field trips and so on.

And whether you go for readymade or locally built, draw up specs, take pix
of the present library, make a sketch of what the "new" library would look
like (have someone else do it, if you're not artistic), get estimates for
the new stuff from a couple of different locations, and put together a
portfolio to take around with you when you approach these people. Good luck.
