Dear Mary I have all my series in containers in alphabetical order on the shelves in one section of the library called Select-a-Series and it was the best thing I ever did. The kids are right into series anyway so it makes them easy for them to find quickly, and easy to shelve. I never had anyone check out Stevenson when they wanted a Stine - they just wanted to know where the Goosebumps were. I also put the works by popular authors into tubs on the fiction shelves, so they are also easy to access. It also breaks up the rows and rows of books looking like formidable soldiers, ranks not to be disturbed. Before we did this some years ago, students who were reluctant borrowers just grabbed the first thing they saw because they had to have something so, as often as not, it was a picture puzzle book, an Asterix or whatever else had its cover showing. Now, with so many covers showing, they are a little more discerning and taken something with a little more substance to it. As for "junk-food" reading - that is a debate for another time. I am just thrilled that so many of my boys, especially, are now avid borrowers of stuff they wouldn't have even looked for, before. And here in Australia, the issue of boys' reading is really being taken seriously by publishers and nearly all our top-shelf authors are writing books in series for them.
