I use Athena and it beeps when items are checked in or out. If something is amiss, like a fine due on a book checked in, a patron with too many items checked out, a book checked in that is on reserve, etc, I set it to make a "bong" sound. It draws the attention of the person using it to see what needs to be done. We found that necessary because when it just beeped as usual, we didn't notice and when we scanned the next book (checking in), it just cleared the notice and we set the book aside thinking it had been checked in. Then we had kids notified that they had overdue books when they had actually turned it in.
