There is a very comprehensive test of Anti-spyware and effectiveness in
various combinations at http://windowssecrets.com/050127/#story1 The
bad news? no one product is enough, look for the best combination. Also,
be aware that most of the free products are only free for home use;
check the licenses.

some additional resources:
The SpyWare Warrior at http://spywarewarrior.com/ has several features:
1: the blog (at http://www.netrn.net/spywareblog/ ) has links to
anti-spyware products (free and commercial) and to several
tutorials and other resources. The blog itself provides adware and
spyware news and software updates.
2: The 'Testing' section (http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm)
reviews programs and discusses specific strengths and
weaknesses. Good for figuring out the best combination of products your
home situation needs. One set of reviews lists sites they go to to get
their machine infected.
3:Their 'Rogue and Suspect' section
(http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm) talks about
programs that appear to be
anti-SW, but may only be lead-ins to purchasing or even install spyware,
etc.
4: There is a forum that's pretty active with several members with good
expertise if you need further assistance
(http://www.spywarewarrior.com/index.php).

Also, check at symantec.com or mcafee.com. Usually they have an easy to
download removal tool for a specific AV or Adware product. Better to
protect yourself, but good places to help solve the problem afterward.
