Our sixth graders complete an extensive study of Canada, Mexico, and the rest of the Americas. This year, a social studies teacher and her student teacher would like to use a historical fiction book about Canada. I have looked at some lists of award-winning Canadian fiction, and we have class sets of Incident at Hawk's Hill (which I've taught), Sweetgrass by Jan Hudson (which no one has used in my four years in the media center) and The River. They are leaning toward using The River, but I was hoping to find something that included more about Canada itself. Of course, one catch is that the book must be somewhat readily available for us to put together a class set. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions of other books to consider. Thanks.
