Sorry, I asked too quickly. I will answer my own question. Pete appears to be a Crocodile Bird or Egyptian Plover or Pluvianus aegyptius depending which you prefer. They eat insects off the skin of the Nile crocodile often entering the mouth to clean up. They also act as a warning signal for any danger in the area. I think that I will have the third graders look this up next week. Who would have thought it would have been so easy to find. The Web is wonderful!! Connie W.
