It was amazing to read Tony's post about the importance of reading because I have a
similar question/ request.
One of our first year teachers is teaching a Matrix class for at risk students. (
they do study skills, coping skills etc.) She came to me the other day nearly in
tears because the kids just don't seem to want to make any effort at all. "how can
I help them, if they won't do anything?" She's asked me to find some resources--
her request--"Can you forward me some good information that will be of interest to
the students in MATRIX on the BENEFITS of reading
-increasing their creativity, eduction,etc."..

This just seems like such a no brainer to me. I know there are lots of studies out
there that I can find.. However, I'm guessing those pieces of information wouldn' t
impress these kids at all. Does anyone have any other ideas - perhaps stories or
other materials that might appeal to these kids and get the message across. I will
be glad to post a hit of any replies. Thanks, Darlene
