When I worked in a high school, we were constantly being asked to "loan out"
various supply items - scissors, glue, tape, staplers, rulers, etc. - most
of which were never returned. After loosing a fair portion of our supplies,
we finally created a "supplies station" which students were free to borrow
from, but when they took any item, they had to leave a shoe. The shoe was
returned to them when the item was returned to us. Once that policy was
instituted, we never lost another item, ahd most of our students found the
concept humorous!
