If you haven't read the Newbery Honor Book, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy
by Gary Schmidt, don't miss it. IMHO, this is the one that should have won the
gold. The writing is beautiful, the story is brilliantly done. A minister's boy
on the coast of Maine, doesn't fit in, becomes friends with the black settlement on
the island nearby, has adventures with whales, and throughout the book a very
powerful theme weaves its way into your mind.... I haven't enjoyed a book this
much in a long time.
