I have been at this game a long time and I still have lots of overdue books. I tried offering candy to those who returned overdue books. We instituted a fine 3 years ago. The books are still overdue but if I can collect the fine money, it does buy some new books. We have tried holding grade cards(not legal) but the kids who had overdue books did not usually care about that. I have students who have books overdue from 2 years ago. I have tried and tried to keep them out of the library altogether, but the teachers send them anyway. They get to use the computers and the copier, just can't check out. I have only had one teacher that truly helped the situation; she made the kids wait in the hall while the other students checked out books or did research. I do have a half-price fine day once a year so that students can pay half of their fine to clear their record. Many of them will not even bother to do that. It makes me wonder why we even stamp the books with a date. Good luck.
