Friends, As a former English teacher and now a librarian, I am concerned about the quality of our AP courses and students. What I see the supposedly AP student doing or not doing in our library is very disturbing. As I try to get a grip on what is happening and why it is happening, I will tell you that we are a 9-12 rural Arkansas school of approximately 830 students, and our tenth grade class, for instance, has almost 60 students in the AP English classes. In a 10th grade class total of 200 students, don't you think that number is very high?? What seems to be happening is that AP is a social thing and parents want their children in those classes. Are they truly AP classes? Well, when they are, the parents complain and whine about their children having to work too hard. What do we do? We water them down. We aren't doing the program, the school, the students or the community a service here. If you have time to answer the following questions, I would love to hear from you. 1.How many students are in your school? 2.How many AP classes do you have? 3.How many students will an AP class have or what percentage of your students take AP classes? 4.Do you feel that many/most of the students who sign up for AP are truly AP? 5.Are your AP Classes challenging or do you see them being "watered down"? 6.Which AP Classes work on research projects and papers in the library? Any suggestions????? Thanks for any information you can provide.
